The scandal of dairy products and Chinese milk based products proven to contain melamine has created panic among parents. That is why Badan Pengawasan Obat dan Makanan (Indonesian Drugs and Food Agency) immediately pulled 28 food products suspected to contain melamine originating from China.
This melamine scandal started from the findings of infant formula adulterated with melamine in China which took the lives of several victims including four infants and fifty three thousand (53.000) other children suffering from kidney damage. Four biggest manufacturers in China; Sanlu, Yashili, Suncare and Mengniu Dairy have been proven to use melamine to boost their protein content. Up to today, studies about the effects of melamine consumption on humans have never been conducted as melamine has never been for consumption. But the danger of melamine poison is fatal. Death caused by melamine poison on a massive scale occurred last year in the United States. This case aroused due to melamine induced animal feed from China. These animals died because of kidney failure. It is feared that the same could happen to humans.
On the other hand, melamine contained in milk has no negative effect on the retail industry such as Ranch Market. “Ranch Market has never imported dairy products or food with milk based from China. This means that the dairy products and milk sold at Ranch Market are safe for consumption” said Flora Chrisantie, Ranch Market’s Management Representative. Flora also added that Ranch Market has a standard for food safety acquired from the HACCP (Hazard Anlysist Control Point) and ISO 9001:2000 certificates, so all foods which are available and sold at Ranch Market are safe.
WHAT IS MELAMINE?
Melamine is a hard synthetic substance which is dangerous for human body. It is an organic based chemical (C3H6N6) used as trimmer and cyanide. Melamine contains 66% Nitrogen and is often used to mix plastic and fertilizer. The nitrogen-rich molecule is added to food products in order to increase their apparent protein content. Melamine is useless for human health and has no nutritious content. On the other hand if one consumes melamine, one can develop various illnesses such as kidney failure, skin irritation, reproductive organs damage and cancer.
