Carambola (Starfruit)

Carambola are small oval-shaped fruit with five distinct ribs. These ribs result in five-sided star shapes when the fruit is sliced horizontally – hence the carambola’s alternative name, starfruit. Glossy yellow or pale green in colour, the carambola has edible thin skin, with crisp, juicy and refreshing flesh. The flavour varies from sweet to slightly sour. Available all year round, carambola are good served fresh in salads, juiced, or cooked in preserves and Asian dishes.

To Buy

Look for firm, evenly coloured fruit, with no soft spots or brown-coloured areas. Ripe fruit may have a slightly waxy looking sheen to them.

To Store

Store carambola in the fridge for up to 1 week.

To Prepare

Rinse carambola in cold water then trim the corners of their ribs. Slice horizontally to achieve star shapes.
Quick ideas with CARAMBOLA (STARFRUIT)

1. Make an attractive fruit salad for entertaining by slicing carambola horizontally then combining with sliced kiwifruit, green grapes and cubes of honeydew melon. Just before serving, drizzle with a mixture of warmed honey and lime juice and top with mint leaves.
2. For a refreshing drink, trim edges off 6 carambola then juice together with 1 lime and ¼ pineapple. Great for summer afternoon drinks or serve with breakfast.
3. For a fresh salad, combine horizontally sliced carambola with shredded chicken, baby Asian salad greens, coriander leaves and red capsicum. Drizzle with a mixture of lime juice, diced red chilli, brown sugar and fish sauce.
