Sapote are great dessert fruit – black sapote are also known as chocolate pudding fruit, while white sapote have custard-like, pear-flavoured flesh. Black sapote resemble a persimmon in shape, with olive to brown coloured skin, and rich, chocolate-flavoured dark brown flesh. White sapote are plum-shaped with green to yellow skin. Their yellow flesh has a creamy texture and a flavour reminiscent of the pear. Sapote are available all year round, and are best eaten on their own as a dessert fruit, or used to make ice-creams and puddings
To Buy
Ripe black sapote should have smooth dark green to brown-black skin, with a raised crown at the top of the fruit. White sapote should be green to golden in colour, with smooth skin.
To Store
Store sapote at room temperature until they are slightly soft to the touch. Once at this stage they should be enjoyed as soon as possible, or refrigerated for 2 to 3 days
To Prepare
Cut sapote in half then scoop out the soft flesh, removing the seeds. Pulp can be frozen in an airtight container for several months.
Also known as the chocolate pudding fruit, sapote are an excellent source of Vitamin C. Among other benefits, this vitamin works in the body to help heal wounds, as well as helping to maintain healthy gums.
