Watermelon

Watermelon are the most popular and well-known variety of melon. Large and oval to round in shape, watermelon have dark green skin with lighter green stripes. Their flesh is pink to red in colour, with a mixture of black seeds and small, immature white seeds. Watermelon have a mildly sweet and refreshing flavour, making them a perfect treat on hot summer days. Available all year round, they’re best used fresh on their own, in salads, or in juices.

To Buy

Look for watermelon with firm, smooth skin. They should feel relatively heavy for their size, and if tapped lightly should sound hollow.

To Store

Store whole watermelon at room temperature for up to 1 week. Once cut, wrap in plastic and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

To Prepare

Cut watermelon into wedges and enjoy straight from the skin, or cut in half then peel away the skin and remove the seeds.
